The heartbeat of the church is missions. Jesus left us with a clear command in Matthew 28:19-20, often referred to as the Great Commission: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” This is not a suggestion or a task for only a select few—it is the mission of every believer. The church exists not just to gather for worship and fellowship, but to actively spread the gospel, making disciples of all nations. If we fail in this calling, we fail in our primary purpose as followers of Christ.

Missions begins with a burden for the lost. When we understand the eternal consequences of sin and separation from God, our hearts should be moved with compassion. Romans 10:14 asks, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” This passage reminds us that the world is full of people who have never heard the name of Jesus or understood His love and sacrifice. Without faithful Christians taking up the call to share the gospel, countless souls will remain in spiritual darkness. Every believer has a role in missions—whether it be through personal evangelism, supporting missionaries financially, or interceding in prayer for those on the front lines.

Yet, missions is not limited to foreign lands; it starts in our own communities. Jesus instructed His disciples in Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Our "Jerusalem" is our neighborhood, workplace, and city. Every conversation, every interaction, and every relationship is an opportunity to witness for Christ. We are called to shine the light of the gospel not only in distant countries but also in the places we walk every day. Our families, our coworkers, and our neighbors need to see and hear the good news of Jesus through us.

As we enter this month focused on missions, take a moment to ask God to open your heart to His burden for souls. Pray for a deeper awareness of the lost around you, both near and far. Seek His guidance on how you can be more involved in His mission—whether through prayer, giving, or personal evangelism. Missions is not just about what happens overseas; it’s about living every day with a Great Commission mindset. The time to act is now, because eternity is at stake. Will you answer the call?
