Missionaries are on the front lines of taking the gospel to unreached people, bringing the light of Christ to places where His name is not yet known. However, they cannot do this work alone. Just as soldiers need support from those back home, missionaries need the church to stand with them in prayer, encouragement, and financial provision. Paul expressed deep gratitude for the church in Philippians 4:16-17, saying, “For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.” When we give to missions, we are not just making a donation—we are actively participating in the spread of the gospel and sharing in the eternal fruit of their labor.

Supporting missionaries goes beyond financial giving; they need our prayers just as much, if not more. The Apostle Paul repeatedly asked churches to pray for him as he carried out the work of the gospel. In 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2, he pleaded, “Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.” Missionaries face spiritual battles, cultural barriers, and logistical challenges every day. Our prayers sustain them, strengthen them, and open doors for the gospel. When we pray for missionaries, we become active partners in their ministry, even if we never set foot on a foreign mission field ourselves.

Encouragement is another crucial way to support those serving in missions. Many missionaries experience loneliness and discouragement as they serve far from home, often in difficult and spiritually dark environments. Hebrews 13:3 reminds us, “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them.” A simple letter, email, or message from a supporting church can lift their spirits and remind them that they are not forgotten. Sending care packages, reaching out to their families, and staying connected with updates on their ministry can make an incredible impact on their endurance in the field.

This month, take intentional steps to support missionaries. Begin by praying specifically for those your church supports, asking God to meet their needs and open doors for their ministry. Consider writing a note of encouragement to let them know you are standing with them. If God has blessed you financially, give generously to missions offerings, knowing that your investment is eternal. Missions work is not just for those who go—it is the responsibility of the whole church. By supporting missionaries, we play a vital role in fulfilling the Great Commission together. Will you do your part?
