Later on that same resurrection day, two discouraged disciples walked the dusty road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Their hearts were heavy with confusion and sorrow. The One they had hoped was the Messiah had been crucified. Though they had heard rumors of an empty tomb, it hadn’t yet changed their perspective. As they walked and reasoned, a stranger drew near and joined them. They didn’t recognize Him, but Luke 24:27 tells us, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” The risen Christ, concealed from their eyes, opened their hearts through the Word.

What a scene—Jesus walking with them, patiently teaching them how the whole Old Testament pointed to His death and resurrection. He didn’t first reveal Himself through sight, but through Scripture. Before they saw His face, they heard His voice through the Word of God. Their hearts burned within them as He unfolded truth that changed everything. What they thought was the end of hope became the beginning of understanding. Jesus had not failed—He had fulfilled. He had not been defeated—He had delivered.

It was only when they invited Him in, and He broke bread with them, that their eyes were opened. “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight” (Luke 24:31). They had walked with the risen Lord. They had heard the living Word. And now, they were eyewitnesses to the resurrection. What did they do next? They ran back to Jerusalem that very hour to tell the others. When you’ve truly encountered the risen Christ, silence is no longer an option. The truth must be shared.

The road to Emmaus reminds us that Jesus meets us in our confusion and walks with us in our sorrow. He speaks through His Word and reveals Himself to those who seek Him. Even when we don’t recognize Him, He is near. And when He opens our eyes, everything changes. Today, open the Scriptures and invite Him to walk with you. Let your heart burn again with the truth of who He is. The risen Savior still walks with His people—and He is waiting to reveal Himself to you. Will you invite Him in?
