Missions is not just about sharing the gospel—it is engaging in a spiritual battle for the souls of men and women. Every time the gospel is proclaimed, a war rages in the unseen realm. The enemy does not want the lost to hear the truth, and he actively works to resist the spread of the gospel. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us of the true nature of this battle: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Missionaries, evangelists, and all who seek to bring the lost to Christ face opposition—not just from the world but from spiritual forces that seek to keep people in darkness. To stand firm in this battle, we must be equipped with the armor of God.
Ephesians 6:13-17 outlines the essential spiritual tools we need to fight in this war: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace on our feet, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God. Each of these pieces is vital for standing against the attacks of the enemy. The belt of truth keeps us grounded in God's Word, the breastplate of righteousness protects our hearts from sin, and the shield of faith defends us against the lies and discouragement of the devil. The gospel of peace equips us to bring good news to the lost, while the helmet of salvation keeps our minds secure in the assurance of our redemption. Most importantly, the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, is our weapon to fight back, just as Jesus did when He resisted Satan's temptations in the wilderness.
Prayer is another critical weapon in spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:18 commands us to be “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” No missionary, evangelist, or believer can stand against the enemy’s attacks without prayer. The devil fears a praying Christian because prayer unleashes the power of God. When we pray, we intercede for lost souls, ask for divine protection, and seek God’s strength to endure spiritual battles. Every mission effort must be bathed in prayer—before, during, and after the work is done.
This week, take time to pray for those on the frontlines of missions. Ask God to strengthen them, protect them from the attacks of the enemy, and equip them for every challenge they face. If you are actively sharing the gospel, recognize that you, too, are engaged in this battle. Stand firm, knowing that God goes before you, fights for you, and has already claimed the ultimate victory. The battle is real, but so is the power of our God. Will you put on His armor and stand strong for the mission He has given you?
